📝 Written Rules Quiz

Test your enhanced understanding of scoring, rotation, NVZ details, and serve/return patterns. You need 9 out of 10 correct to pass this section.

1. Where must both feet be when you serve (relative to the baseline and court)?

2. When the serving team's score is even in doubles, which side does the server stand on?

3. After the serve, what should the receiving team generally do after returning the ball?

4. Can your serve land on the kitchen (NVZ) line and still be legal?

5. Who calls "in" or "out" on a given side of the court?

6. What is a "side out" in doubles pickleball?

7. If your momentum carries you into the kitchen after a volley, even if the ball is dead, is it a fault?

8. How many attempts do you get at a serve if you miss or fault the first one?

9. Where should the non-hitting partner stand in doubles during a rally?

10. When the ball hits the net on a rally (not the serve) and lands in, is play stopped or does the rally continue?

🎯 Practical Test Components

Demonstrate your intermediate skills through hands-on testing. All practical components build upon Rank 1 fundamentals with enhanced control and consistency requirements.

🎾 Mizunoe Serve Test – Control and Depth

Pass: 25/30 legal serves (83%)
Goal & Setup:

Improve consistency and basic depth control beyond Rank 1. Total serves: 30 (all from behind baseline, underhand, below waist, diagonal).

Test Segments:
  • Segment A – Deep serves: 15 serves aiming deep (last 3–4 feet before baseline, not out)
  • Segment B – Medium/developing serves: 15 serves aiming between NVZ line and mid-service court
Legal Serve Requirements:
  • Underhand motion, paddle below waist at contact
  • One foot on the ground, neither foot touching court or baseline
  • Ball lands in correct service box, not in NVZ or on NVZ line
Scoring & Pass Criteria:
  • Count 1 point for each legal serve that lands in the intended target zone
  • Pass: 25/30 legal, with at least 10/15 deep serves successful
💡 Tips:

Focus on consistent contact point and depth control. Practice both segments separately before attempting the combined test.

🏓 Mizunoe Groundstroke & Return Test

Pass: 15 rallies of 6+ shots + 10/15 returns to kitchen
Part A: Groundstroke Rally (15 rallies of 6+ shots)
  • Setup: Both players start at baseline
  • Feed: Partner feeds crosscourt ball to your forehand to begin each rally
  • Execution: Alternate forehand and backhand groundstrokes if possible
  • Requirements: One bounce per side, aim crosscourt, moderate pace
  • Success criteria: Rally successful at 6 or more shots total (3 each side)
Part B: Return-to-Kitchen Pattern (10/15 successful)
  • Setup: Opponent serves crosscourt. You start about 1–2 feet behind the baseline
  • Execution: Return the serve deep (past NVZ) and then move quickly to the kitchen line
  • Goal: Hold stable at the kitchen by the time the opponent hits their third shot
  • Pass criteria: 10 of 15 returns both land in and are followed by you reaching the kitchen line and set before the opponent hits again
💡 Tips:

Focus on consistent contact in front and fewer unforced errors. The return-to-kitchen pattern is crucial for advancing play.

🍃 Mizunoe Dink & Third-Shot Test

Pass: 2 rallies of 40+ dinks + 10/15 third-shot drops
Part A: Dink Rally (10 minutes, better consistency than Rank 1)
  • Setup: Both at NVZ line, crosscourt dinking
  • Execution: Soft dinks only (no volleys above net height)
  • Requirements: Aim into opponent's kitchen, low over net, controlled swing
  • Pass criteria: Show at least two rallies of 40+ consecutive dinks without a fault
  • Progress note: Overall, fewer unforced errors than your Mizunoto level
Part B: Third-Shot Drop Intro (10/15 successful)
  • Setup: You start at baseline serving side. Partner at kitchen line receiving
  • Execution: Partner feeds or returns deep shot to your baseline
  • Attempt: Soft, arcing third-shot drop that clears net and lands in opponent's kitchen or transition area
  • Target zone: Inside NVZ line to ~3 feet beyond
  • Pass criteria: 10 out of 15 balls land in proper soft-drop zone, high enough over net to be safe
💡 Tips:

Use soft continental grip for dinks, focus on third-shot drop timing. No bullets or frequent nets allowed - safety and placement over power.

🎯 Mizunoe Game Simulation (Improved Play vs 2.5 Tester)

Pass: Competitive score or improved performance vs Rank 1
Format:
  • Doubles game to 11, win by 2, against at least one certified 2.5-level player
What the Evaluator Looks For:
  • Consistent legal serves and returns
  • Automatic movement toward the kitchen after returns
  • Occasional attempts at third-shot drops instead of only hard drives
  • Basic communication with partner (calling balls, basic stack/position awareness)
Pass Criteria:
  • Competitive score (e.g., 11–7 or closer) OR clearly improved play vs Mizunoto test
  • No repeated rule confusion or arguments
  • Player demonstrates understanding of basic rules and flow
💡 Tips:

Focus on implementing the skills learned in previous tests. Show progression and strategic thinking, not just shot-making.
